Activity in the Canadian oil and gas market has been significantly lower than normal over the past two years. Oil prices, since reaching more than US$100 a barrel in 2014, have been plummeting and have crashed below US$27 a barrel in early 2016. At such low prices, many producers were having difficulty covering their operating costs, let alone setting aside funds to invest in future growth. The province of Alberta, home to the third largest crude oil resource in the world and extensive natural gas resources, was especially hard hit by the low energy prices.

Investors across the globe have been extremely cautious about investing in the energy sector. During times of such declining prices, many investors have avoided broad groups of equities, even though every company and every stock is different. Company fundamentals such as valuation and balance sheets were often ignored and stocks were chosen based only on predictions of macro trends…
