Tencent YouTu Lab, an image technology team of Tencent Holdings Ltd. [HK:0700], has developed its One Key Make-Up Removal software, which can restore a digitally dolled up face photo to its original appearance using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

Tencent YouTu Lab introduced this function at the International Conference on Computer Vision held in Venice, Italy. Many photos today vary considerably from their subject’s real look, and the team aims to restore these over-beautified photos to their original form.

Although the AI algorithm of the software is already mature, its practical applications are still under exploration, but Tencent YouTu Lab said it will not be very difficult in future to restore a delicate photo to its original look.

Great challenges in this restoring work come from difficulties in identifying process links for photos in facial beautification, but through the development of new algorithm, people can now restore photos without knowing the parameters of the beatifying system, the lab also noted.

US company Magic Unicorn Inc. previously introduced MakeApp, a type of software with similar functions, which can not only remove the beautified effects, but those created by physical cosmetics as well.
