Alibaba Cloud Computing Co. and German carmaker BMW AG [ETR:BMW] have teamed up to develop an Internet of Vehicles product.
BMW will use the device, which the pair hopes to release in the first half of next year, on all of the vehicles it sells in China that have cloud-based connectivity, China Securities reported.
Owners will be able to give voice commands to an in-home artificial intelligence speaker developed by the cloud computing unit under Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. [NYSE:BABA], which can tell drivers how far their remaining charge or gas tank will take them, and whether windows and doors are closed properly.
There are now over 400,000 vehicles operating within the Internet of Vehicles, said Hu Xiaoming, president of Alibaba Cloud. The company hopes to upgrade the system on a major scale next month.
Alibaba also teamed up with auto giant Ford Motor Co. [NYSE:F] earlier this month to boost development of the Internet of Vehicles and AI and step up their digital marketing.
