Pei Duanqing, president of Guangzhou Institute of Biomedicine and Health, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has been selected as a new foreign member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). He became the ninth Chinese scientist so distinguished, China Youth Daily reported.

EMBO announced this year’s list of 62 new members yesterday.

Prof. Pei engages in basic theoretical research of cell fate regulation and has done systematic and original work in the induction of pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and their mechanisms, information from Guangzhou Institute of Biomedicine and Health indicates.

He is also head of the National Specialized Expert Panel on Stem Cell and Transformation Research. Pei is further a member of the Clinical Translation Research Committee of the International Stem Cell Association, a member of the Human Genome Editing Study Team, a member of the Regenerative Medicine Symposium of the American Academy of Sciences, and a life member of the North American Chinese Society of Biologists (SCBA).

The European Molecular Biology Organization is a famous nongovernmental academic organization in the international biomedical community. Established in 1964, it has its headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany. New members are nominated and selected by current members and 85 percent to 90 percent are from the 29-member countries of the European Conference on Molecular Biology, while 10 percent to 15 percent are foreigners from non-member countries, with only a few opportunities provided to top non-European scientists.
