China United Network Communications Group, better known as China Unicom, has opened a unit in South Africa to leverage telecom business opportunities in regional markets.
China Unicom South Africa branch held its opening ceremony in the country’s largest city of Johannesburg on July 18, online news outlet Chinanews reported.
China Unicom will strengthen its ties with African operators and equipment manufacturers to provide companies with cloud computing, big data, the Internet of Things, as well as networking products, the Beijing-based firm said. The targeted clients will include both Chinese companies settling in the African continent and South African companies going abroad.
The digital economy has become a significant engine for Africa’s economic growth, said David Kramer from the municipal ministry of electronic administration. “China Unicom’s entry into the African digitalization family is expected to play a big role in the digital transformation in Africa.”
This is an important move promote the win-win cooperation between China and African countries in the communications sector along the Belt and Road initiative, said Executive Vice President Wan Jun from the South Africa-China Economic and Trade Association.
More than 100 representatives from the South African government, the SACETA, operator partners, and Chinese-invested companies attended the opening ceremony.
