US President Donald Trump said in a Twitter post on Thursday evening that he was confident a trade deal with Beijing could be reached within the next 90 days, voicing his agreement with a statement he said was from China.
“The teams of both sides are now having smooth communications and good cooperation with each other. We are full of confidence that an agreement can be reached within the next 90 days”, Mr Trump quoted a statement from China as saying, before himself adding: “I agree!”
The statement from the president comes after a tumultuous day of trading for global markets after the arrest in Canada of a top executive at Chinese telecoms group Huawei fanned concern over the ability of Washington and Beijing to make their trade truce permanent.
