Samsung sold 6.7M 5G phones in 2019

  • Samsung (OTC:SSNNF,OTC:SSNLF) says it sold 6.7M 5G smartphones worldwide last year.
  • The tech giant says it took up about 54% of the global market share for 5G phones, citing Counterpoint data.
  • The company also announces that it will bring 5G to the Galaxy Tab S6 tablet in South Korea in Q1.

Alphabet CLO sells $77M of stock

  • Alphabet (GOOG -0.3%)(GOOGL -0.3%) chief legal officer David Drummond has sold $77M worth of stock in a pre-arranged sale, including unloading the rest of his Class A shares.
  • The sale marks the third consecutive month that Drummond sold over $70M in shares.
  • Alphabet is currently investigating Drummond for alleged sexual misconduct.

FCC accepting comments on Huawei, ZTE risks

  • The FCC says it will accept public comment on its determination that Huawei and ZTE (OTCPK:ZTCOY,OTCPK:ZTCOF) pose national security risks after last month’s Huawei petition challenging the decision.
  • In November, the FCC voted unanimously to block U.S. rural carriers from using an $8.5B government fund to buy equipment or services from the Chinese equipment makers.

Lenovo launching Microsoft Teams device

  • At CES, Lenovo (OTCPK:LNVGY,OTCPK:LNVGF) will debut the ThinkSmart View conferencing device that’s meant to work with Microsoft (MSFT -0.6%) Teams.
  • View pricing starts at $349, making the device an affordable alternative to its high-end ThinkSmart Hub 500.
  • The View will launch later this month.
  • Teams competitor Slack (WORK -1.3%) is trading down after the news.

Snap acquires AI Factory for $166M – reports

  • Snap (SNAP +1%) has (quietly) acquired AI Factory, a Ukrainian computer vision start-up, for $166M, TechCrunch notes.
  • Snap had already worked with AI Factory to create its new Cameos feature providing animated selfie-based videos.
  • AI Factory was founded by Victor Shaburov, a former Snap director of engineering who had come to the company through a similar acquisition of his previous firm Looksery.
  • The Looksery acquisition in 2015 also amped up Snap’s features for animated selfie lenses.
