Alibaba Group Holding has agreed to explore next-generation navigation systems and in-car digital assistant services with German auto giant Audi, the Chinese internet giant said today.
Audi is working with two Alibaba subsidiaries: digital mapping services provider AutoNavi and smart speaker maker Tmall Genie. The aim is to develop functions including navigation for underground parking lots and a navigation system for new-energy vehicles.
Beijing-based AutoNavi will provide highly precise maps based on autonomous driving functions, which may be applied in Audi’s next-gen car models. The pair’s cooperation dates back to 2006, when AutoNavi started offering map data to Audi.
“AutoNavi will for the first time support the comprehensive application of highly precise maps based on autonomous driving and the next generation of navigation technologies in Audi’s projects,” said AutoNavi President Liu Zhenfei.
Ingolstadt-basedAudi will continue to collaborate with Alibaba in areas such as in-car payments, cloud-computing and Big Data, in addition to navigation systems.
Owners of Audi vehicles can use Alipay’s mini-programs to order food, top up cell phones, track orders and other services provided by Tmall Genie. The carmaker announced at CES Asia last year that it would link Alibaba’s Tmall Genie to its in-car system, Audi Connect.
