The UK is not only the birthplace of Google DeepMind but has also nurtured numerous AI startups. Although the UK’s startup market ranks first in Europe, it has yet to produce a homegrown AI giant on the scale of OpenAI or France’s Mistral. NVIDIA (NVDA) has announced plans to invest £2 billion (approximately $2.7 billion) to support the development of the UK’s artificial intelligence industry. The company stated that the funds will be used to “empower the UK to compete in the global AI market” and will involve collaborations with several prominent venture capital firms, including Accel, Air Street Capital, Balderton Capital, Hoxton Ventures, and Phoenix Court.

At an event in London, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang revealed that the investment will cover innovative companies across various sectors, including autonomous driving technology firms Wayve and Oxa, fintech company Revolut, as well as AI companies PolyAI, Synthesia, Latent Labs, and Basecamp Research. Among these, Wayve separately announced that it has received a $500 million investment from NVIDIA to accelerate the development and deployment of its AI models. Additionally, the total investment includes NVIDIA’s previous £500 million equity investment in the UK AI data center company Nscale.

This initiative is one of a series of AI investments announced by U.S. tech companies during President Trump’s visit to the UK. Microsoft and OpenAI have also unveiled multi-billion-pound investment and collaboration projects in the UK. NVIDIA stated that the funds will help local companies address challenges such as shortages in computing resources, rising energy costs, and insufficient funding. The participating funds in this collaboration, including Accel and Balderton, have previously invested in well-known companies like Synthesia, while Air Street Capital focuses on the AI and biotechnology sectors.

As one of the Silicon Valley leaders accompanying Trump on his visit, Huang recently attended a banquet hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle. Prior to this, NVIDIA collaborated with Nscale and OpenAI to launch the “UK Stargate” project, aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities of AI systems.

Since the beginning of this year, the UK government has introduced multiple plans to accelerate the growth of the artificial intelligence industry by speeding up data center construction, optimizing grid access, and streamlining approval processes.
