Global leading digital payment service provider PayPal has officially entered into an online shopping partnership with U.S. tech giant Google. The two companies will integrate their respective digital payment systems and artificial intelligence tools to jointly drive the intelligent development of the global transaction system. According to the cooperation agreement, PayPal’s online checkout feature will be embedded into several of Google’s flagship products, including Google Cloud, Google Ads, and Google Play. Together, they will establish a new standard for agent-based shopping and payments centered around “AI agents,” helping merchants more accurately display products to their target customers.
This collaboration aims to build secure and efficient core standards, ensuring that merchants, consumers, and autonomously operating AI agents can complete transactions within a controlled risk environment. PayPal CEO Alex Chriss stated that the two companies will jointly explore new forms of future commerce, with related products and services expected to launch as early as the fourth quarter of this year. He particularly emphasized that PayPal, with its vast customer data resources, can enable AI to become a shopping partner that truly “understands consumer preferences,” realizing so-called “agentic commerce”—where AI agents represent consumers throughout the entire shopping process.
At the payment level, PayPal will process digital card transactions for multiple Google services through its enterprise-grade payment system while also expanding cryptocurrency payment channels. Chriss pointed out that a key component of the future commercial landscape will be an ecosystem “driven by AI agents and empowered by encryption technology.” This partnership also continues PayPal’s strategic deployment in the field of AI payments, having previously supported the agentic commerce platform of AI tech company Perplexity.
For PayPal, this collaboration marks a critical transition from traditional payment services to settlement infrastructure for the AI era. It not only further integrates PayPal into the Google ecosystem but also positions it at the core of agentic AI e-commerce. Leveraging its capabilities in identity verification, risk control, and dispute resolution, PayPal provides underlying support for agent-driven transaction loops. For Google, after surpassing a market capitalization of three trillion dollars, there is an urgent need to translate its AI technological capabilities into tangible commercial benefits. The partnership is expected to significantly enhance Google’s efficiency in AI search, ad conversion, and application monetization, advancing its Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) from a technical specification to a scalable production system.
