Power Metals Advances North America’s Only Cesium Project, Targets 2027 Production

Power Metals (TSXV: PWM; OTC:PWRMF) is advancing the Case Lake project in northeastern Ontario, described by the company as North America’s only cesium project, with early production targeted for 2027. The push comes as U.S. defense ambitions collide with critical mineral supply chain realities.

The United States imports 100% of its cesium requirements. The rare mineral is used in atomic clocks, GPS systems, aerospace solar technology, advanced communications networks and high-tech defense equipment. A high-grade cesium discovery in Ontario could offer a new North American supply source.

Global cesium supply remains highly concentrated. Commercial production has historically come from only a few deposits: Tanco in Canada, Bikita in Zimbabwe and Sinclair in Australia. Sinclair is currently inactive, Bikita is controlled by Chinese interests and faces raw material export difficulties, and Tanco has largely shifted to recovering lower-grade material from stockpiles and historical workings. According to Shanghai Metals Market data, certain cesium compounds have traded above US$200,000 per tonne.

Case Lake is wholly owned by Power Metals and hosts a mineral resource estimate of 13,000 tonnes at 2.40% Cs2O, ranking as the fourth-largest cesium resource globally. The estimate covers only one of eight pegmatite dykes, with 17 highly prospective untested targets. Drilling has returned assays up to 24.7% Cs2O and 6,211 ppm tantalum, while metallurgical test work produced concentrate grading up to 19.97% Cs2O. The property spans approximately 9,500 hectares in the Timmins-Cochrane region of northeastern Ontario, a tier-one mining jurisdiction with access to forestry roads, rail, power lines and hydropower infrastructure.

The project contains high-grade cesium mineralization with associated lithium and tantalum. Extensive drilling has established a maiden resource, and the project has entered the permitting process. At the West Joe dyke, drill intervals exceeded 20% Cs2O, with individual pollucite lenses grading up to 26% Cs2O. Because mineralization sits close to surface, Power Metals is pursuing a quarry-style operation rather than an underground mine. Ore would be crushed and sorted on site before concentrate is shipped to customers, reducing capital requirements and operational complexity. The company is advancing a staged development plan to bring initial cesium production online while exploration continues across the broader property.

Power Metals Chairman Johnathan More said the company is taking advantage of how the deposit occurs. The cesium mineralization is close to the surface, which allows a quarry-style operation and a staged development approach. Producing concentrate does not require a large processing facility, resulting in lower capital requirements and less complexity than many critical mineral projects.

Albemarle holds the cesium offtake for Case Lake and has provided a US$5 million prepayment to support development. Former Albemarle exploration executive Eric Schrimsher has joined Power Metals’ Cesium Advisory Committee. Strategically, secure cesium supply matters to aerospace and defense companies. Lockheed Martin builds GPS satellites for the U.S. Space Force, and RTX’s businesses span missile defense, radar, communications and advanced aerospace systems. Neither company has been identified as a direct Case Lake customer, but both illustrate the dependence of Western critical mineral supply chains.

Power Metals CEO Haydn Daxter said: “There is currently no operating source of high-grade cesium production anywhere in the world.”

Case Lake is advancing against that backdrop. If successful, North America would gain a new potential source of cesium supply at a time when governments, defense contractors and technology companies are seeking secure access to critical minerals.
