AMD Snaps Six-Session Winning Streak, But Bull Thesis on AI Compute Remains Intact

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) closed down 1.5% at $614.10 on Wednesday, ending its run of six consecutive winning sessions. The semiconductor stock gained approximately 24% over those six trading days, bringing its year-to-date advance above 180%. AMD has climbed nearly 35% in the past month. September has been a strong month for the name, with 10 positive sessions and only five down days. The milestone came earlier this week when AMD’s market capitalization surpassed $1 trillion for the first time.

The powerful run-up has been fueled by broad strength across AI and chip stocks. Wall Street analysts remain broadly constructive on AMD. Forty-four analysts have assigned buy or better ratings, while 11 rate the stock hold; no sell recommendations are in place. Analysts argue the long-term AI compute market still offers substantial upside for AMD. Under a scenario where AMD captures 15% of the data-center GPU market, the firm’s related revenue could approach $350 billion by 2035.

A structural shift in AI data-center workloads is opening a new growth frontier. AMD has observed that the CPU-to-GPU ratio within AI data centers is evolving, moving from the historical range of 1:4 to 1:8 toward 1:1. The company projects the server CPU total addressable market will grow at a compound annual rate exceeding 50% through 2030, reaching $220 billion by the end of the decade.

AMD benefits from a diversified portfolio covering both server CPUs and data-center GPUs. Its Instinct data-center GPU family has been adopted by leading AI operators including OpenAI, Meta and Anthropic. On the operational front, AMD’s second-quarter data-center revenue jumped 107% year over year to $6.7 billion, driven by robust demand for both server CPUs and data-center GPUs. The firm continued to capture server CPU market share, lifting its share by 7.2 percentage points year over year in Q2.

Wednesday’s pullback has not erased the market’s positive long-term earnings outlook. Consensus forecasts project AMD’s earnings growth will accelerate to 105% in 2027. AMD estimates the global AI chip market will hit $2 trillion in annual revenue by 2030, representing a 40% compound annual growth rate. While the stock faces short-term volatility, AMD’s expanding footprint in AI infrastructure means the core bull case built around AI computing remains intact.
