With September 2026 drawing to a close, the broader U.S. stock market has settled into a pattern of late-summer consolidation and selective sector rotation. Investors are continuing to digest shifting macroeconomic data and repositioning portfolios for the final stretch of the third quarter, putting individual stock picking and sector trends firmly in focus. Against that backdrop, energy-related shares have been among the areas under notable pressure.
Over the past month, several energy stocks posted sizable losses. The list below spans coal & consumable fuels, oil & gas equipment & services, oil & gas storage & transportation, and oil & gas drilling, ranked by one-month price performance from the steepest decline to the smallest:
Quant ratings across the group diverge sharply despite the broad share-price slide. National Energy Services Reunited Corp. (NESR) retains a Strong Buy rating, while Patterson-UTI Energy, Inc. (PTEN) also carries a Strong Buy. Uranium Energy Corp. (UEC) and Excelerate Energy, Inc. (EE) are both rated Hold. At the lower end, Peabody Energy Corporation (BTU) sits at a Sell, and Centrus Energy Corp. (LEU) is rated Strong Sell.
In contrast, a separate cohort of energy names delivered solid gains over the same period. CVR Energy (CVI) jumped 35%, with Solaris Energy Infrastructure (SEI) close behind at 34%. HF Sinclair (DINO) and Calumet (CLMT) each added 14%. Valero Energy (VLO) climbed 13%, while Marathon Petroleum (MPC) and PBF Energy (PBF) rose 10% and 9%, respectively. Phillips 66 (PSX) tacked on 8%, and International Seaways (INSW) gained 7%.
The gains came as investors rotated across energy-related companies spanning refining, infrastructure, and shipping.
