US AI Selloff Sparks Concerns, Strategists Warn Excessive Bearishness Equally Dangerous

US stocks are currently under dual pressure from AI valuation concerns and high interest rates, with technology and semiconductor shares facing sustained selling and market sentiment tense. However, multiple strategists have found support from market breadth, earnings expectations, credit conditions, and historical patterns, cautioning that excessive bearishness also carries risks. Investors need to seek a balance between extreme bearishness and blind chasing of highs, while watching for the possibility that the market’s leading theme shifts from momentum stocks to quality companies under a high-rate environment.

Technology and semiconductor sectors extended their declines in Friday’s early trading. The weakness in technology stocks is not an isolated case this time, with Anthropic’s downward revision of its IPO valuation becoming a factor weighing on market sentiment. The semiconductor sector has fallen about 15% cumulatively from its previous peak, with related semiconductor ETFs and the S&P information technology sector ETF weakening in tandem. However, Brett Pachuba of SpotGamma reminded that one should not linearly extrapolate the entire AI sector’s prospects from a single event. The scale of AI profits and the data center track is far larger than Anthropic alone, and the market still has significant right-tail upside risk: if investor positioning is too low, positive news from giants such as Meta (META) and Google (GOOG), combined with seasonal factors, could easily trigger concentrated chasing of gains, and blind bearishness requires vigilance.

Ryan Detrick of Carson Group sees positive signals from market structure. More S&P 500 constituents are advancing than declining, with healthcare and financial sectors performing notably well. Capital flowing out of technology stocks is more indicative of benign sector rotation rather than a signal of a broad market crash, and investors can use this opportunity to adjust portfolios and increase diversification.

However, the high-rate environment will reshape the market’s leading themes. Inflation exceeding expectations has raised the probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike in October, and junk bond spreads are widening. In an environment where rates remain elevated for an extended period, companies with stable cash flow, controllable debt, and good governance will be more advantaged, while momentum stocks that previously led the market and companies with weaker balance sheets will face pressure. US job gains in the first nine months of 2026 were significantly higher than the full previous year, and strengthening employment alleviates recession concerns while also giving the Federal Reserve room to maintain high rates to combat inflation.

Bank of America strategist Hartnett is more cautious, with his team planning to stay risk-off for the next three to four weeks. He believes that with inflation-adjusted yields reaching 3%, the Federal Reserve’s October rate hike expectation leaning hawkish, and risks including midterm elections, sticky inflation, and high-debt financing in AI, short-term volatility persists. He recommends increasing allocations to small-cap stocks, REITs, and consumer discretionary sectors that benefit from peak yields, without adding to technology stocks.

Overall, both extreme bearishness and blind chasing of highs are inadvisable. Right-tail risk signals that rebounds will be very rapid once sentiment reverses; under high rates, speculative targets without earnings support will remain under sustained pressure. Historical patterns provide a basis for long-term bulls, but short-term risk warnings also indicate that market volatility is not over.
