Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., announced today that it plans to establish new data centers in Mumbai, India and Jakarta, Indonesia, bringing its total number of data centers globally to 17.

The Chinese tech conglomerate anticipates opening the two new data centers during the current fiscal year, ending March 31, 2018.

“I believe Alibaba Cloud…is uniquely positioned with cultural and contextual advantages to provide innovative data intelligence and computing capabilities to customers in this region,” said Simon Hu, senior vice president of Alibaba Group and president of Alibaba Cloud.

Alibaba Cloud currently has 15 data center locations, covering mainland China, Australia, Germany, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.

The company said the new Asian data centers will offer a full suite of services, providing flexibility for enterprises and organizations to build out their IT infrastructure and run mission-critical and core applications.

Alibaba Cloud will be the first leading global cloud computing company to establish an international cloud data center in Indonesia, enhancing the local IT infrastructure on the back of Alibaba Cloud’s global data center network.

The move responds to Indonesia’s “1,000 Start-ups Movement” initiative launched last year with the aim of nurturing 1,000 ventures by the year 2020, and targeting a cumulative valuation of US$10 billion.

In India, Alibaba Cloud has partnered with Global Cloud Xchange, a subsidiary of Reliance Communications to directly access Alibaba Cloud Express Connect via GCX’s CLOUD X Fusion.

Alibaba Cloud has also established a global partnership with Tata Communications, which will provide direct access to Alibaba Cloud Express Connect via Tata Communications’ IZOTM Private Connect service.
