Shenzhen O-film Tech Co. [SHE:002456], an optoelectronic components maker based in China’s southeastern Guangdong province, plans to invest USD14.2 million (CNY95 million) in a joint venture to develop and manufacture optical glass, optical plastic, optical composite materials and related equipment in Nanchang, in east-central Jiangxi province.

The company has entered into a joint venture contract with Taiwanese liquid-crystal display (LCD) panel specialist Su Chih-Hung, O-film said in a statement yesterday. The two parties will contribute USD14.2 million and USD747,000, respectively, to form Nanchang O-film Curved Display Cover Technology Co. The joint venture will target three-dimensional glass development and production.

Su Chih-Hung previously worked at Taiwan-based AU Optronics Corp. [NYSE:AUO], one of the world’s largest LCD panel manufacturers, and took out many invention patents for the company, public information shows.

The joint venture will specialize in 3D glass research and development and production, per the statement, a field in which Su has extensive experience and resources. The deal will expand O-film’s business lines, and cement its leadership in the touch screen industry.

Three-dimensional curved glass finds extensive applications in manufacturing smartphones, smart watches and tablets, imparting a unique look and texture and edge-control features to such products.
