Leading Chinese handset maker Beijing Xiaomi Technology Ltd. will further its partnership with Microsoft Corp. in various fields, including cloud services, hardware products, and intelligent voice technologies in a partnership that has subsisted since 2015.

The two signed a memorandum of strategic cooperation today. Xiaomi will expand its international market by further using Microsoft’s intelligent cloud platform Azure, while Microsoft will help Xiaomi study and develop hardware products like laptops, tech.ifeng.com reported. Microsoft further plans to apply its intelligent voice assistant Cortana to Xiaomi’s intelligent loudspeaker boxes.

Xiaomi has been employing Azure to offer cloud storage services for the image data of its mobile phone products since 2015. The two then furthered their cooperation, per which Xiaomi pre-installed Microsoft’s Office and Skype software products onto all its mobile phones and tablet computers in June 2016. The two also agreed to cross-license their patents at that time.

Microsoft Chief Executive Satya Nadella visited Xiaomi’s China headquarters in October, and met with Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s chief executive and board chairman. The cooperative memorandum signed this time will bring greater potential for the parties’ technological development, product innovation, and market exploration
