China’s education ministry today instituted an international instruction program for artificial intelligence talent which will provide training for college teachers and students, with renowned AI experts from China and overseas serving as lecturers.

The program, jointly conducted with China’s prestigious Peking University and Beijing-based tech investment firm Sinovation Ventures, will integrate quality AI education resources with industrial resources in China and overseas.

It is expected to offer training to 100 teachers and 300 students this year and 500 teachers and 5,000 students in five years, said Xu Tao, head of the international cooperation and exchange department of China’s Ministry of Education, as technology news website iyiou.com reported today.

The ministry will endow an AI scholarship to fund China’s college teachers and students in further study in the US. The ministry will also work with American colleges to form a talent training alliance to boost educational exchanges and cooperation in AI between China and the US, Xu added.

Tutors include John E. Hopcroft, winner of the Turing Award, the highest prize in the computer field, Geoffrey Hinton, hailed as the father of machine learning, Kai-Fu Lee, founder of Sinovation Ventures and former Microsoft Corp. and Google Inc. (now Alphabet Inc.) vice president, and Prof. Wang Liwei from Peking University.

The training program is a non-profit one and teachers and students can take all courses for free, the ministry said.
