China’s leading telecommunications equipment provider Huawei Technologies Co’s new 5G product has received the European Union’s mandatory approval certificate, making it the world’s first 5G product with such certification.

Huawei has fully met the European Union certification authority’s verification requirements for its C-band Massive MIMO Active Antenna Unit 5G New Radio, or 5G NR, products, achieving the EU’s contracted professional certification agency Tuv Sud Group’s CE-type examination certificate — EU Wireless Equipment Directive-Type certification, which is mandatory to market foreign products within the EU, the company said in a statement.

“Obtaining this EU mandatory certificate indicates that Huawei’s 5G products have won official approval for commercial use. It also represents a significant step towards realizing large-scale commercial 5G deployment,” Huawei said.

The product is a large-scale antenna element base station used to enhance mobile broadband capacity, achieving continuous gigabit-level outdoor transmission speed. Huawei plans to commercialize it this year, the company said.

“Huawei strictly followed related regulations during each step of 5G product development, from component selection to product design. After multiple rounds of meticulous assessment and inspection, Huawei’s 5G products passed TUV SUD’s verification at the first attempt, meeting all stringent CE requirements.”

China’s leading smartphone maker Huawei released its first 5G commercial chip and commercial terminal at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February. It plans to release its first 5G smartphone in the last quarter of next year.

“The awarding of the world’s first 5G CE certificate to Huawei once again demonstrates the company’s 5G leadership. Huawei will continue to further explore and pursue more and more innovative 5G technologies. The purpose of this is to promote the development of the 5G industry and facilitate global operators in achieving 5G commercial use,” it said.
