Lixil Group, the firm behind plumbing fixtures brands American Standards and Grohe, has opened its first international store in China under plans to expand around the globe.

The Toyko-based firm opened a flagship store in Shanghai earlier this month, its first outside of Japan, Chief Executive Bijoy Mohan told Yicai Global. The firm plans to experiment in the eastern metropolis and use feedback to help develop in other markets.

The biggest difference between Ikea and Lixil’s home decoration solutions is that those who go to Ikea already know what they want, whereas Lixil customers are looking for ways to fill up space in their homes and need help with design and installation, Mohan said. He views Ikea’s model as standardization, but labels his firm’s own approach as customization.

After finding ground in Shanghai, the company plans to develop across Asia, the main driving engine behind its international growth, and eventually take on the world.
