Chinese telecom titan Huawei Technologies has sold over 100 million mobile phones globally this year, while setting the target for the whole year to double that, which could come close to Apple’s sales.

The sales volume of Huawei phones exceeded 100 million units as the latest model Nova 3 came out yesterday, state-backed The Paper reported. Last year, this target was met in September, two months after.

Huawei is expected to reach the full-year goal of shipping 200 million mobile phones this year, as the firm moves closer to the second-best position in the world, said Yu Chengdong, chief executive of the Consumer Business Group at Huawei, adding that the sales volume of Huawei mobile phones grew 51-fold in the past 7 years.

However, the target may not be enough to overcome Apple’s lead. The California-based firm’s latest iPhone X has become its best-selling model and in the first three months this year the firm sold over 52 million iPhones in total. Last year, the US firm sold 215 million of its handsets, ranking the second worldwide after Samsung, while Huawei sold about 29 percent less, ranking third.

The Nova 3 may be one of the best selfie aids in the market as it is equipped with a 24-megapixel camera on both sides of the device. The phone is priced at CNY2,999 (USD445) in China.
