The United Nations has selected Alibaba mogul Jack Ma to co-chair a new panel made up of tech experts aimed at furthering the efficiency of use of digital technology.

The founder of China’s biggest e-commerce firm will share the role with Melissa Gates, the US philanthropist and co-founder of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the UN said in a statement.

The group will comprise 20 members from global industry, civil society and academia, and will hold discussions on cutting-edge digital technologies such as blockchain and artificial intelligence. The UN aims to explore these fields and some of the unintended consequences that they can bring.

“You cannot look at web 3.0 without looking at blockchain or without looking at AI,” said Representative of the UN Secretariat and the Executive Director of the High-Level Panel Ambassador Amandeep Gill. “So, our hope is that through this discussion of these various digital domains, the business models, the opportunities and the risks and the unintended consequences in terms of human rights, in terms of privacy, in terms of subversion of democracy, we are able to come out with some common principles.”

The appointment marks the third time that Jack Ma has held a key position at the UN. Ma and Norwegian Prime Minister Solberg were selected as advocates of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals in early 2016. Later that year, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon invited him to serve as the special advisor on youth entrepreneurship and small business for the UN Conference on Trade and Development.

According to the nine-month mandate, the panel’s members will meet twice: first in New York in September during the UN General Assembly, and then in Geneva, Switzerland next January. They will also consult with the representatives from non-governmental organizations and the Geneva-based International Telecommunication Union.
