Alibaba Group Holding will source CNY1 billion (USD141 million) worth of crayfish from Hubei through its chain supermarket Hema Fresh to help the virus-stricken central Chinese province’s agriculture recover as soon as possible after the Covid-19 epidemic, the Hangzhou-based tech titan said yesterday.

The crawfish will be sold on to consumers across China through the supply chain system of Alibaba’s Digital Agriculture Division on various of the company’s e-commerce platforms, including Hema Fresh, Taobao and Tmall later this month, The Paper reported.

Hubei’s crawfish output is for about half of the country’s total, according to Alibaba. To promote sales, the company will adopt a new digital marketing method allowing consumers to book in advance during the crustaceans’larval period and thus help farmers pinpoint their market from the get-go.

Taobao unveiled its special Hubei sales page on March 31 to let local producers sell their bounty and announced the sale of 1.2 million tons of Hubei agricultural output so far this year.

Alibaba’s various business lines will also convene 100 Hubei agricultural goods sales conferences from this month to June to speed sales of local tea, citrus fruits, lotus root, mudbugs, fish and other agricultural and aquacultural products.
