Hainan Airlines, a unit under Chinese conglomerate HNA Group, plans to help compatriot carmaker BYD send goods and anti-pandemic resources overseas after its parent penned a deal with the new-energy vehicle specialist currently moonlighting as a mask manufacturer.

HNA and BYD inked an agreement at the auto firm’s headquarters in Shenzhen yesterday that will see the pair team up in multiple fields, such as marketing new-energy vehicle purchases, HNA said online. The duo are also looking for other ways to collaborate regarding the construction of the Hainan Free-Trade Port.

Airlines around the world have grounded a large number of flights since the outbreak of Covid-19, resulting in waning passenger demand and a greater need for cargo transport. Hainan Airlines and Capital Airlines, also under HNA, began operating charter flights for domestic and international freight at the end of March to leverage excess space in passenger flights still operating and to transport cargo between China and the rest of the world.

BYD has built 300 production lines for masks amid the surge in demand and has been expanding its output by 1 million or more masks every day, many of which have been heading to global markets since last month.
