Iron ore prices have plunged to their lowest level in over six weeks due to concerns about the economic outlook in China. The demand for iron ore has been severely impacted by the prolonged Chinese real estate crisis. The stagnant Chinese property market has entered its third year of decline, exacerbating liquidity pressures on developers. Policymakers are now attempting to revive confidence among homebuyers worried about falling house prices and unfinished housing projects.

In May, the sales of new homes from the top 100 real estate companies dropped by 34% year-on-year to 322.4 billion yuan ($44.5 billion). While this decrease was lower than the 45% decline seen in April, it highlights the challenges facing the Chinese real estate sector.

Goldman Sachs‘ Chief China Economist, Hui Shan, stated, “Due to the policy shift towards destocking, new housing starts and construction will remain weak. Our real estate team expects a 15% decline in new housing starts this year, and iron ore prices could fall to $100 per ton by the fourth quarter.”

Iron ore supply is plentiful, with iron ore inventories at Chinese ports reaching their highest level in over two years. Meanwhile, the rising trend in rebar prices (a construction product) is slowing down.

Ying Wei, analyst at China’s Industrial Futures, said, “We believe iron ore prices will decline in June. The steel fundamentals have weakened, and destocking pressures have increased in the off-season, potentially leading to production cuts.”

Singapore iron ore futures briefly dropped by 4.4% to $110.40 per ton, the lowest level since April 17, with a trading price of $110.50 per ton at 3:57 pm. Dalian iron ore futures prices fell by 2.5%, while Shanghai steel contracts saw a decline.

Analysts point out that future iron ore prices will be influenced by macroeconomic policies and steel production controls, posing challenges to trading strategies. Overall, the steel industry faces a complex market environment and uncertainties, requiring investors to closely monitor market trends and policy changes.
