OpenAI has partnered with e-commerce giants Shopify Inc. (TSX: SHOP) and Etsy to enable U.S. consumers to shop directly within ChatGPT. This move transforms the AI chatbot from an information tool into a commercial platform.

Now, when users ask for product recommendations, ChatGPT can directly query Shopify’s extensive product inventory and display purchasable options within the conversation. This creates a seamless “discover-and-buy” experience, bypassing the traditional model of searching and redirecting to external sites.

The service is free for users, with merchants paying only a small commission on sales. Shopify’s VP of Product noted this aligns with how people are increasingly discovering products through AI conversations. Etsy highlighted that its unique, creative goods are a natural fit for AI-powered personalization.

The announcement had an immediate market impact, driving Shopify’s stock price up 6.3%. Analysts suggest this partnership could help sellers build a competitive edge by tapping into ChatGPT’s vast user traffic.

This feature, though currently U.S.-only, signals key industry trends: a shift from graphical interfaces to natural language, the expansion of transaction scenarios beyond standalone apps, and competition evolving from traffic acquisition to ecosystem synergy.
