Recently, Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk released positive Phase III clinical trial data for its new-generation weight-loss drug, cagrilintide, along with new real-world findings on its existing product semaglutide (the active ingredient in Wegovy®). Boosted by this encouraging news, the company’s stock rose nearly 3% in Tuesday’s trading session, significantly outperforming the slightly declining S&P 500 index. This reflects the market’s strong recognition of the company’s R&D progress and product potential.
At the Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, Novo Nordisk unveiled the Phase III clinical trial results of cagrilintide for obesity treatment. The 68-week study involved once-weekly subcutaneous injections. Data showed that patients treated with cagrilintide achieved an average weight loss of 11.8%, significantly outperforming the 2.3% weight reduction in the placebo group, demonstrating excellent efficacy. Furthermore, the drug was generally well-tolerated, with adverse reactions primarily consisting of mild to moderate gastrointestinal symptoms, consistent with the safety profile of similar drugs, indicating promising clinical application prospects.
Simultaneously, the company also presented real-world research findings on semaglutide, further expanding understanding of the drug’s mechanism of action and clinical benefits. The study found that semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy®, not only effectively controls weight but also significantly improves patients’ eating-related psychological behaviors. Specifically, 46% of participants reported a notable reduction in “food noise”—intrusive thoughts and emotions related to eating. Even more notably, 64% of patients reported overall improvements in mental health, while 80% gradually adopted healthier lifestyle behaviors after taking the medication. This suggests that the drug may regulate appetite and eating motivation through central mechanisms, resulting in multi-dimensional positive effects.
With its continuous innovation in the field of metabolic diseases, Novo Nordisk has not only solidified its leading position in the weight-loss drug market but has also expanded the value proposition of its products through increasingly robust clinical evidence. As its next-generation candidate drug, cagrilintide is expected to offer new treatment options for obese patients in the future. Meanwhile, the additional benefits of semaglutide in improving psychological and behavioral health further enhance its market competitiveness and development potential.
