OpenAI, a leader in the field of artificial intelligence, recently disclosed its long-term development plan to investors, targeting a total revenue exceeding $280 billion by 2030. By then, revenue contributions from its consumer business and enterprise business are expected to be on par. To achieve this goal, the company plans to invest approximately $600 billion in the computing power sector, explicitly stating that spending plans will be closely tied to revenue growth. Previously, its CEO had mentioned a related investment of $1.4 trillion. The company’s stock ticker has not yet been made public.
To realize its ambitious development goals, OpenAI is advancing a financing round exceeding $100 billion. In this round, about 90% of the funds will come from strategic investors. It is reported that NVIDIA plans to invest up to $30 billion, with SoftBank and Amazon also confirming their participation. Prior to this funding round, the company’s valuation may have already reached $730 billion.
Reviewing its performance in 2025, OpenAI achieved a revenue of $13.1 billion, surpassing its previously set target of $10 billion. Meanwhile, its annual expenditure was $8 billion, also lower than the original target of $9 billion. However, according to The Information, the company’s adjusted gross profit margin for 2025 slipped to 33%. The company still anticipates that its cash flow will turn positive by 2030.
Founded as a non-profit laboratory in 2015, OpenAI rapidly gained prominence after launching ChatGPT in 2022. Currently, its weekly active user count has returned to an all-time high, exceeding 900 million. Additionally, the weekly active users for its coding product, Codex, have surpassed 1.5 million, directly competing with Anthropic’s Claude Code.
In the hardware sector, OpenAI is actively positioning itself. Over 200 employees are currently involved in the research and development of a series of AI-driven devices, including a smart speaker, and potentially smart glasses and a smart desk lamp. According to reports, the smart speaker will be OpenAI’s first hardware product to be launched, with an expected price between $200 and $300. Sources indicate that this product will not ship until after February 2027 at the earliest. The speaker will be equipped with a camera, enabling it to gather information about the user and their surroundings, such as identifying objects on a table and nearby conversations. The camera will also support facial recognition similar to Apple’s Face ID for authenticating purchases. Regarding the smart glasses, reports suggest mass production might not occur until 2028. As for the smart desk lamp, although a prototype has been created, it has not yet been decided whether it will be brought to market.
Venturing into the hardware space marks a significant step in OpenAI’s strategic layout. Previously, the company spent $6.5 billion to acquire io Products, a startup founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive. Jony Ive is regarded as a central figure in Apple’s design aesthetic and was involved in designing almost all of Apple’s major products. This move aims to capitalize on the growing market opportunities in physical AI and augmented reality.
Currently, the smart glasses market has garnered significant attention. Facebook’s parent company, Meta Platforms (META), has achieved notable success with its Ray-Ban smart glasses, which allow users to record, take photos, and live stream content using a tiny camera. Meanwhile, there are reports that Apple (AAPL) and Google (GOOG) are also developing their own smart glasses products.
