For Alphabet (GOOGL), the market’s focus has shifted from the sheer scale of investment to the efficiency of input-output. Analysts emphasize that the key going forward is not which specific talent departs, but whether the company can clearly demonstrate in its financial reports that its massive AI investments are translating into tangible technological leadership, revenue growth, and profitability improvement. Whether it can win back the market’s trust is the real test Alphabet currently faces.

Since hitting an all-time high in May, Alphabet’s stock price has retreated by approximately 15%, erasing more than $700 billion in market value, making it the single largest drag on the S&P 500 index during the same period.

Talent Attrition Compounded by Model Delays Erodes the Competitive Edge

Investors are reassessing Google’s leadership position in the global AI race. On the one hand, the company continues to pour huge sums into building infrastructure; on the other hand, the development progress of its new flagship model, Gemini 3.5 Pro, has fallen short of expectations, with its coding capabilities considered to lag behind those of Anthropic and OpenAI. Although Google recently released Gemini 3.7 Flash, it has not announced an updated release timeline for 3.5 Pro. Analysts point out that over the past 9 to 12 months, Alphabet enjoyed a valuation premium as an AI winner, but that advantage is now fading.

At the same time, the successive departures of senior AI talent have exacerbated market anxieties. Within a few months, key employees have jumped to competitors. Analysts believe that this “brain drain” constitutes an additional risk, particularly at a time when investors are closely watching whether AI technology can be successfully commercialized into profitable returns.

Competitive Advantages Remain, but Efficiency in Converting Investment into Output Must Be Proved

Compared with talent issues, the growing AI capital expenditure is a more immediate concern for investors. Alphabet is investing heavily in building data centers and has raised $25 billion through the bond market.

Despite rising doubts, Alphabet still possesses clear advantages, notably its self-developed TPU chips and vast computing infrastructure. The company has stated that the update pace of its AI products is at an all-time high, and new models are growing rapidly. Some investors believe that management changes could bring new opportunities, and with world-leading AI computing resources, Google still has the foundation for success. However, even after the pullback, Alphabet’s stock price has still risen by approximately 65% over the past 12 months, outperforming the broader market. Nvidia’s (NVDA) optimistic sales outlook has also partially alleviated market concerns about a cooling in AI investment.
