Novo Nordisk (NVO) has entered a collaboration with artificial intelligence firm Anthropic to accelerate new drug development and advance AI-driven software upgrades, a tie-up that has emerged as a key market focal point as investors gauge whether the company can reverse its fortunes amid a deep one-year share price pullback and mounting competitive pressure in the GLP-1 space.
Under the partnership framework, Novo Nordisk’s in-house scientists and computational teams will lead the identification of core drug discovery challenges. The two companies will jointly develop targeted solutions for specific scientific hurdles and workflows to support biological reasoning, with the overarching goal of shortening the full drug discovery and development cycle. As an initial implementation target, Novo Nordisk will test the Claude Science model across selected R&D workflows, prioritizing scientific scenarios where the combined capabilities of both firms are expected to deliver the strongest synergies.
Beyond core drug discovery research, Novo Nordisk will also leverage Anthropic’s frontier large language models to strengthen its AI-driven software development capabilities — a critical enabler for scaling AI deployment across the entire organization. The collaboration has been designed with robust data governance mechanisms and human oversight processes to ensure all AI applications align with Novo Nordisk’s ethical guidelines and compliance standards.
Mike Doustdar, President and CEO of Novo Nordisk, described the partnership as another testament to the company’s ambition to become “the world’s most AI-driven healthcare company.” Building on its existing AI initiatives with other technology partners, the alliance with Anthropic will supercharge the company’s R&D function and advance its mission of delivering transformative health solutions to people living with chronic diseases, Doustdar said. He noted that AI not only boosts R&D productivity and compresses the path from laboratory research to marketed products, but also unlocks entirely new avenues for scientific exploration and deepens understanding of human biology and drug mechanisms.
Dario Amodei, Co-founder and CEO of Anthropic, said the advancing capabilities of AI hold the potential to compress a century’s worth of biological and medical breakthroughs into a single decade. By providing leading researchers with access to safe, capable and trusted frontier models, the partnership can cut research timelines, improve outcomes and discover medicines and treatments that significantly enhance human quality of life — the very purpose of the collaboration with Novo Nordisk, Amodei added.
Once a front-runner in the GLP-1 race, Novo Nordisk is currently navigating dual pressure on both operational performance and market valuation. The company’s market value has fallen roughly 23% over the past 12 months, as investors raise doubts over its growth capacity and ability to compete with peer Eli Lilly. Novo Nordisk built its early GLP-1 lead with blockbuster products Ozempic and Wegovy, but has steadily lost ground in the increasingly competitive landscape. The company has posted underwhelming sales results recently, with a newly appointed CEO working to orchestrate a business turnaround, leaving near-term growth prospects clouded with uncertainty.
Despite pronounced near-term headwinds, a segment of market participants remains optimistic about Novo Nordisk’s long-term investment merit. On the product pipeline front, a higher-dose formulation of Wegovy has demonstrated superior weight loss efficacy, while the company’s oral weight loss medication — which received regulatory approval late last year — is still in the early phase of its commercial rollout, with substantial room for market penetration. From a valuation standpoint, the company trades at a forward price-to-earnings multiple of just 13 times based on consensus analyst projections, a depressed level that underscores its long-term allocation value.
Whether the deepened AI R&D push via the Anthropic partnership will emerge as a defining catalyst for Novo Nordisk to reset its R&D efficiency and recapture growth momentum remains to be seen, as markets await concrete progress from the collaboration’s rollout.
