China’s millennials make up the main insomnia crowd in the world’s second populous country, according to report from Ali Health Information Technology Co. [HKG:241], the flagship healthcare unit of Alibaba Group Ltd. [NYSE:BABA]. The data from Alibaba’s retail platforms show that among the users who have searched the word “insomnia”, those aged between 18 and 25 accounted for nearly 40 percent of the total population, becoming the main insomnia sufferers, the 21st Century Business Herald reported.
Ali Health released the “Interesting Data Report on Beating Insomnia” as part of its “Sub-health Series.” The report is based on the consumption data of Alibaba’s retail platforms, Taobao and TMall.
The month September emerges as the time of the year when users search the word ‘insomnia’ the most. This momentum runs until the end of the year, data revealed. At the same time, the sales of healthcare products soothing the brain, improving sleep and alleviating insomnia also began to climb during that period.
In terms of age breakdown, those aged between 18 and 35 accounted for nearly 80 percent of the total population who searched for the word “insomnia,” which means every eight people out of 10 within this age group suffer from insomnia.
Among every 100 people who had insomnia, about 56 are men and 44 women. That is to say nearly 60 percent of the searchers were male.
Many users also seek “self-help.” Buying sleep-assisted, sedative-like products is most immediate and common solution they resorted to, data indicated. People who suffer from insomnia often intend to take some health products to improve sleep or buy a protective, massage equipment to alleviate the symptoms of insomnia, data from Alibaba’s retail platforms show.
The long night creates a unique shopping mood, leading to the increased sales of health products like moxibustion, needle warming moxibustion, compound essential oil, bath medicine bag, fragrant spices, sleep instrument and scraping tablets.
Apart from such products, a lot of users initiate online health counseling with doctors entering Ali Health platform through Taobao, Tmall, Alipay and other channels, using text, photos or phone call to get professional health guidance from doctors, data showed.
