China’s plans to build its highest-altitude gravitational wave observation station are progressing smoothly, and the first phase of construction is almost complete.
China began its plan to build the station at 5,250 meters above sea level in Ali, Tibet Autonomous Region, state-owned news agency Xinhua reported, quoting the project’s Chief Scientist Zhang Xinmin.
“The Ali Plan will begin observation in 2020 and we expect results in 2022,” said Zhang, who works with the Chinese Academy of Sciences. “We hope to give a sky map showing the polarization of cosmic microwaves in the northern sky.”
Rainer Weiss, who won the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics, said the project will be a beautiful example of science in China when he visited the country earlier this year.
