Oneplus Science & Technology will join hands with a US unit of German telecom firm T-Mobile to promote the Chinese cellphone maker’s products in the US market.

Oneplus will collaborate with T-Mobile for the first time, founder and Chief Executive Liu Zuohu said at a press conference in New York yesterday.

Chinese handset firms’ success in the US largely depends on their abilities to secure partnerships with local telecom companies. In the second quarter last year, some three-quarters of flagship models sold in the US were purchased through four major operators, including AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless, Tencent news media reported.

Teaming up with US operators usually takes about a year in order to go through all the tests. Phonemakers also need to secure licensing from the Federal Communications Commission and a third-party agency.

Oneplus has a strong market performance in terms of its high-end cellphones in the US, market research firm IDC’s smartphone survey that was published in May shows. The Chinese firm ranked first among mobile phones priced between USD400 and USD600 with a 44 percent market share last year, the report added.

The Shenzhen-based phone company’s global sales exceeded USD1.5 billion in 2017, selling over 1 million units mainly in the US, India and China.
