A leading fund manager predicts that some ordinary ASX-listed mining stocks may outperform Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) and BHP Group by 2026. While the market has previously favored banking stocks, analysts believe capital could start rotating from the strong-performing financial sector to the long-depressed mining sector.

Commonwealth Bank (ASX: CBA) has seen its share price rise by around 40% over the past year, reaching a market capitalization of AUD 299.6 billion, making it the ASX’s most valuable company. However, some analysts warn that its stock may face a pullback. Meanwhile, BHP (ASX: BHP) has declined by 14% over the past 12 months, shrinking its market cap to AUD 195.9 billion and slipping to second place. Although the market expects BHP to benefit from growth in its copper business, Perennial portfolio manager Sam Berridge believes some ordinary ASX mining stocks could deliver stronger performance.

Berridge notes that if trade tensions ease and the U.S. continues to cut interest rates, commodity prices could see a significant rebound between late 2025 and 2026. However, he does not believe BHP will be the biggest beneficiary, instead favoring ASX-listed mining stocks focused on aluminum, copper, rare earths, and gold.

Perennial’s Strategic Natural Resources Fund is heavily invested in these sectors, including:

Copper stocks: Such as FireFly Metals (ASX: FFM), whose share price has risen 32% over the past year to AUD 1.10.

Gold stocks: Ramelius Resources (ASX: RMS) and Turaco Gold (ASX: TCG) have surged 27% and 138%, respectively, benefiting from a 29% rise in gold prices (now at USD 3,331/oz).

Rare earth stocks: Brazilian Rare Earths Ltd (ASX: BRE), though down 28% over the past year, could rebound if rare earth prices recover.

As market dynamics shift, commodity-related stocks may become the investment highlight of 2026, with some ASX mining stocks potentially outperforming traditional blue chips.
