American Airlines (AAL) plans to begin installing SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service on more than 500 narrow-body aircraft starting in early 2027. This move will further intensify the onboard connectivity race among airlines vying for premium passengers.

Large-Scale Deployment Targeting Premium Experience

This deployment will cover the majority of American Airlines’ domestic and short-haul international fleet, including the upcoming Airbus A321neo and A321XLR aircraft. The service will leverage Starlink’s low Earth orbit satellite network, capable of supporting streaming media, gaming, and video calls. The announcement comes just months after American Airlines revealed a partnership with AT&T (T) to provide free high-speed Wi-Fi to members of its AAdvantage frequent flyer program, a service primarily powered by Viasat, with some aircraft equipped by Intelsat. That deployment began earlier this year, aimed at narrowing the gap with competitors, who are increasingly relying on premium amenities and onboard technology upgrades to attract high-spending customers. Previously, American Airlines had lagged behind United Airlines (UAL) and Delta Air Lines (DAL) in service upgrades and is now working hard to catch up. Heather Garboden, American Airlines’ Chief Customer Officer, stated that as a premium global carrier, the company has been seeking world-class partners like Starlink to deliver the services its customers demand.

Industry Race and Changing Supplier Landscape

Airlines are increasingly turning to Starlink to improve their intermittent onboard internet services. United Airlines has already begun deploying this satellite Wi-Fi on part of its regional fleet and plans to eventually expand its reach. Southwest Airlines also announced earlier this year that it plans to equip more than 300 aircraft with Starlink internet by the end of 2026, with the first aircraft entering service this summer. Meanwhile, Delta Air Lines has chosen onboard Wi-Fi provided by Amazon, with CEO Ed Bastian noting that Amazon’s product offers broader entertainment and retail features alongside satellite internet. In addition to deploying faster Wi-Fi, airlines are investing billions of dollars to upgrade premium lounges, seats, and frequent flyer programs.

Installation Schedule and Next Steps

American Airlines stated that the installation of Starlink will begin in the first quarter of 2027. The airline currently operates more than 6,000 flights daily to over 350 destinations in more than 60 countries. A spokesperson added that other aircraft not equipped with Starlink will continue to use Wi-Fi services provided by Viasat and Intelsat, which is owned by SES SA.
