Barrick Mining (TSX: ABX, NYSE: B) has named Sebastiaan Bock chief executive of its Rest of World division, effective immediately, handing him oversight of a gold and copper portfolio spanning Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and Asia Pacific that produces more than 2 million gold-equivalent ounces a year.
Bock takes the helm carrying a distinct advantage: a network of Chinese partnerships. The international business has forged ties with Chinese counterparts through joint mine ownership and co-investment, a feature Chairman John Thornton has described as a differentiator for the portfolio. The company said deeper collaboration with Chinese partners could unlock benefits in joint investments, technology access and supply-chain support.
The appointment comes as Barrick presses ahead with plans to separate its North American and international operations. A months-long dispute with Newmont (NYSE: NEM, ASX: NEM) over Nevada mining assets has been resolved, clearing the final obstacle to the split. Under the settlement, Newmont agreed to pay Barrick $1.95 billion in cash within 30 days and consented to the planned initial public offering of Barrick’s North American gold assets, which the company expects to complete by year-end.
Once separated, the Rest of World portfolio will carry a distinct mix of political, operational and investment risks compared with the North American assets, putting a sharper focus on the international division’s performance. Barrick expects output from the portfolio to grow by more than 20% over the next three years.
Bock joined Barrick in 2019 as finance chief for Africa and the Middle East and was appointed chief operating officer for the region in 2022. BMO Capital Markets analysts viewed the promotion as positive, pointing to production growth and the Chinese partnership as key selling points for the overseas business. The analysts noted that Bock will report to current CEO Mark Hill until the North American IPO is completed and is expected to become CEO of Barrick afterward. By elevating an executive with deep experience in its international operations, Barrick is aiming to position the post-split overseas company as a standalone investment story with its own appeal.
