The massive computing power demands brought by the artificial intelligence wave are pushing nuclear energy back to center stage of the global energy landscape. As tech giants scramble to secure stable, clean power supplies, companies across the nuclear fuel supply chain are charting distinctly different growth trajectories. Uranium Energy Corporation (UEC) and Oklo (OKLO) – one a traditional mining heavyweight with deep expertise in uranium extraction, the other a disruptive force betting on advanced reactors and fuel recycling – present investors with a compelling choice in 2026. Which one offers the more attractive nuclear investment case?
Headquartered in Texas, Uranium Energy employs In-Situ Recovery (ISR) technology to extract uranium, a method that offers significant cost and environmental advantages over traditional underground or open-pit mining. The company operates under a “hub-and-spoke” model, with two central processing platforms in Wyoming and Texas that collectively hold licensed production capacity of approximately 12 million pounds of yellowcake per year. More critically, Uranium Energy maintains a 100% unhedged production profile, meaning the company captures the full upside of rising uranium prices.
The uranium price outlook remains highly constructive. As of the end of July 2026, the spot price had climbed to $86.38 per pound, with Citi analysts projecting further gains to the $100-$125 per pound range within the year. Bank of America Global Research is even more bullish, forecasting average uranium prices of $135 per pound from the second half of 2026 through 2027 – implying 56% upside from current levels. Analysts project Uranium Energy’s revenue to grow at a 57% compound annual growth rate between 2025 and 2028, with adjusted EBITDA turning positive in 2027 and more than doubling the following year.
From a valuation perspective, nine analysts currently assign UEC a “Strong Buy” rating, with an average price target of $18.03 – representing approximately 58% upside from the current price of $11.38.
By contrast, Oklo represents a far more visionary – and speculative – path for the nuclear industry. The company is developing the Aurora powerhouse, a factory-fabricated small fast-neutron reactor designed to run on spent fuel from conventional nuclear plants, aiming to unlock the roughly 95% of residual energy still trapped in used nuclear fuel. Oklo also plans to build a commercial fuel recycling facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, in an effort to establish a commercial closed loop for nuclear waste recycling.
On the technology front, Oklo achieved initial criticality at its Groves isotope reactor in the second quarter of 2026, marking a key milestone in transitioning from theory to practice. In May, the company was selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to enter negotiations under the Surplus Plutonium Utilization Program, potentially gaining access to government-designated materials for conversion into commercial fuel. Additionally, Oklo has signed a letter of intent with Centrus Energy to secure high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) supply starting around 2029.
However, these advancements remain in a high-investment phase. Oklo posted a cumulative net loss of $81.6 million in fiscal 2026, with its full-year cash usage guidance revised upward to $120-$150 million, and capital expenditures expected to reach $400-$500 million. The company does not anticipate generating material revenue from its Aurora reactors and Oak Ridge fuel facility until the early 2030s.
On the basis of near-term certainty, Uranium Energy clearly holds the advantage in the 2026 investment landscape, backed by existing operating assets and direct leverage to rising uranium prices. Its business model is proven, its profitability inflection point is approaching, and its current valuation remains attractive. Oklo, while possessing disruptive potential in nuclear waste recycling and advanced small reactors, still faces years of commercialization hurdles and is better characterized as a strategic long-term positioning play at this stage.
For investors seeking tangible returns from the current nuclear cycle, Uranium Energy stands out as the decidedly more prudent choice.
