Microsoft (MSFT), as a global technology giant, has a business portfolio spanning cloud computing, productivity software, and gaming. Leveraging the Azure cloud platform and its partnership with OpenAI, Microsoft provides artificial intelligence tools to customers worldwide, while using its vast partner and reseller channels to deliver Windows and Microsoft 365-related services. For the fiscal year ending in June, the company’s trailing twelve-month revenue was approximately $332 billion, up 18% year over year; net income was approximately $134 billion, with a net margin of 40%. Based on the June 2026 balance sheet, the company’s debt-to-equity ratio was close to 0.1x, indicating a low reliance on debt financing, and its current ratio was approximately 1.2x. Over the same period, trailing twelve-month free cash flow was approximately $67 billion, reflecting strong cash flow reserves.
Morgan Stanley noted that Microsoft’s share price has recently rebounded, and sustaining the rally would require clearing a higher bar. The firm maintained its “Overweight” rating on Microsoft with a price target of $600, implying roughly 12% upside from Monday’s closing price of $533.52. The institution believes that for Microsoft to sustain growth in fiscal 2027, it needs to keep Azure’s growth rate in the mid-40% range, advance the commercialization of Microsoft 365 and Copilot, and maintain strict control over operating expenses. Analyst Adam Wood said that demand for Azure remains strong in both core cloud workloads and AI workloads, and the institution’s chief information officer survey shows that Microsoft is the biggest beneficiary of share gains in enterprise IT budgets as they migrate to the cloud.
Computing capacity expansion will continue to support Azure’s business expansion. Morgan Stanley data shows that Microsoft added approximately 3.25 GW of computing capacity in fiscal 2026 and is expected to bring an additional 4.25 GW of computing capacity online in fiscal 2027, with the continued release of computing scale and efficiency gains becoming a new driver of Azure growth. In the Microsoft 365 business, partner surveys show that the trend of users upgrading from the E3 package to E5 remains strong, with security demand as the main driver, and the rollout of the E7 version is also expected to bring incremental demand, while adoption of the Copilot product also continues to improve. The research report mentioned that last quarter’s better-than-expected results, combined with favorable growth guidance for fiscal 2027, have significantly improved the market’s growth narrative for Microsoft.
As fundamentals and market expectations improve, Microsoft’s valuation has risen somewhat in recent months. Ahead of the disclosure of fiscal 2027 first-quarter results, market expectations for the company’s performance have risen accordingly. However, Microsoft’s current price-to-earnings ratio on trailing next-twelve-month GAAP earnings per share is about 27x, below its historical average of 28x to 29x; its growth-adjusted price-to-earnings/growth ratio is about 1.25x, a more pronounced discount compared with the historical level of 1.9x to 2.2x. The market expects Microsoft’s earnings growth to remain above 20% after fiscal 2027, and the institution believes the company’s risk-reward profile is attractive, but the upward move in valuation also means it will be more difficult for the share price to continue rising in the near term.
