American glass giant Corning Inc. signed a contract with the administration of Wuhan Linkonggang economic and technological development zone in central China’s Hubei province to invest about USD1.4 billion to manufacture Gen 10.5 glass substrate for liquid crystal display, LCD, panels at its local plant.

It is an auxiliary project of the Gen 10.5 liquid crystal display panel production line operated by China’s leading display panel maker BOE Technology Group Co. in Wuhan, Hubei Daily reported. The new project will adopt the latest technology in producing LCD glass substrate to provide basic materials for BOE’s LCD panel production.

Investing a total of CNY46 billion (USD7.2 billion), BOE put the Gen 10.5 LCD panel production line into operation in the zone last month and plans to go into mass production by 2020. The production line mainly manufactures high-end smart LDC panel of over 65 inches with ultrahigh resolution, UHR.

Founded in 1851, Corning focuses on manufacturing special glass materials and ceramic materials which are widely used in fields such as hi-tech consumer electronics, telecommunications, bioscience and pollutant emission control. Its tempered aluminosilicate glass “Gorilla Glass” is renowned because of its widespread use in smart phones.

Wuhan is a cluster for China’s photoelectron display industry and Donghu new technology development zone, or the so-called “Guangu Optical Valley,” is located in the zone. Corning’s project will further promote the development of local LCD panel industrial chain and display technology, it said.
