Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) completed its record $4.75 billion bond offering at a critical juncture as the company accelerates its AI chip business expansion. Investors showed strong subscription demand for the offering, reflecting market recognition of AMD’s growth prospects in the AI accelerator space. However, AMD’s trailing P/E ratio and forward P/E ratio both remain at elevated levels, suggesting that market expectations for future growth have already been largely priced into the stock.

According to sources familiar with the matter, AMD issued four tranches of investment-grade bonds with maturities ranging from three to ten years. The longest-dated tranche was ultimately priced at 90 basis points over U.S. Treasury yields, roughly 25 basis points tighter than the initial pricing guidance, indicating robust investor demand for the bonds.

Financing Supports AI Chip Business Expansion

The financing comes as AMD accelerates its AI-related investments. The rapid development of generative AI in recent years, combined with sustained rising demand for data center computing power from large technology enterprises, has prompted AMD to actively expand its market coverage for AI chips while seeking to further challenge Nvidia’s (NVDA) leading position in the AI accelerator market. Recently, AMD has reached agreements with Anthropic and Microsoft (MSFT) to scale up the deployment of its chips. According to analyst forecasts compiled by Bloomberg, driven by factors including AI demand, AMD’s revenue is expected to grow 47% this year, surpassing $51 billion.

Among these, AMD’s partnership with Anthropic, the developer of the Claude chatbot, has drawn particular attention. As part of the agreement, AMD has committed to investing up to $5 billion in Anthropic, further deepening collaboration in AI chips and computing infrastructure.

Sound Financial Position; Previous Bond Issuance in March 2025

According to AMD’s filing, proceeds from the bond offering will be used for general corporate purposes, which may include repayment of existing debt. AMD has $875 million in bonds maturing next month, so the financing also provides the company with greater flexibility in managing its funding arrangements. Despite its significant foray into the bond market, AMD’s overall balance sheet remains relatively sound. As of June 27, the company’s total debt stood at only approximately $3.2 billion, while cash and short-term investments reached $13.1 billion. An AMD spokesperson stated that the company remains committed to maintaining a strong financial position but did not disclose further details on the specific allocation of funds from this offering.

Notably, AMD’s previous entry into the investment-grade bond market was in March 2025, when it raised $1.5 billion. The current $4.75 billion offering exceeds that previous level, making it AMD’s largest U.S. dollar bond financing to date.

AMD’s stock has performed strongly throughout 2026, more than doubling year-to-date. However, the stock has pulled back recently and is now down approximately 15% from the all-time high set on June 30. If the chipmaker meets analysts’ consensus expectations and the stock remains flat over the next 16 months, its P/E ratio would stand at 31 times by the end of 2027. That is a rich valuation for any stock, which may help explain why AMD’s shares have been retreating.
