Chinese battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology, the world’s largest and better known as CATL, has penned a global purchase order to put its cells in Daimler trucks and buses as the firm furthers its supplies to Europe, a key market for new-energy vehicles. Fujian province-based CATL will provide Daimler Trucks & Buses with batteries for vehicles it plans to launch in 2021, including the Mercedes-Benz eActros, the Freightliner eCascadia and the Freightliner eM2, the supplier said in a statement yesterday. It did not disclose how many batteries it would sell or how much it was asking for them. CATL’s Europe President Matthias Zentgraft said at the Frankfurt Motor show 2019, which ends on Sept. 22, that the company was anticipating supply deals with more European manufacturers this year. “Providing clean power for commercial vehicles with an efficient and reliable lithium battery solution is an important part of the global electrification process,” added CATL President Zhou Jia. The company announced in 2018 that it planned to set up a battery-making facility in Erfurt, Germany, and start production in 2021. It originally hoped to increase capacity to 14 gigawatt-hours in 2022, but said earlier this year that it hopes to further expand the factory to make it the world’s biggest battery-making plant in the world in order to meet demand from its big-name European clients like Daimler, BMW, Volkswagen, Jaguar Land Rover, and PSA Group.
