The World’s Publically Traded Processor of Artisanal Gold
As the USD 53 billion merger between Anglo American and Teck Resources (TECK) enters the final stage of Chinese regulatory approval, Glencore’s (GLCNF) potential stance is emerging as a key variable that could determine the ultimate returns of this deal. The three parties are engaged in complex negotiations over how to integrate their adjacent copper assets in Chile.
The focus of the negotiations is on integrating certain operations of the Collahuasi copper mine, which is 44% owned by each of Anglo American and Glencore, with the Quebrada Blanca (QB) mining area owned by Teck Resources. Anglo American Chief Executive Duncan Wanblad has explicitly stated that the industrial logic of combining these two assets is beyond doubt, and he expects that an agreement with Glencore could generate an additional USD 1.4 billion in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization annually. The parties are currently studying the construction of a 15-kilometer conveyor belt to transport high-grade ore from Collahuasi to QB’s processing facilities. This project is expected to yield an additional 175,000 tonnes of copper per year between 2030 and 2049, with costs and timelines superior to independent development.
It is widely believed that Glencore holds a strong negotiating position. A major investor in Anglo American revealed that Glencore is fully aware of the significant economic value at stake and is likely to adopt a tough stance, meaning the negotiations will not be smooth sailing. Analysts also agree that the Swiss mining giant is highly likely to demand a premium in terms of asset valuation and operational management rights.
Wanblad acknowledged in July that negotiations were underway and emphasized that the parties must first reach an agreement on valuation before deciding on the distribution of synergies. Glencore did not respond to requests for comment.
These negotiations come at a time when major global mining companies are vying to expand their copper asset portfolios. With growing demand from power grids and the industrial sector, copper faces long-term supply constraints, and pure-play copper miners generally command higher valuations than diversified mining groups. This industry trend previously drove BHP to make two attempts to acquire Anglo American in 2024 and 2025, and also led to merger discussions between Rio Tinto and Glencore earlier this year. At the beginning of this month, copper prices once again approached historical highs amid supply disruptions and tariff expectations.
For Anglo American, increasing the proportion of its copper business marks a significant strategic shift. Two years ago, the company became a takeover target for BHP due to declining profitability and an overstretched asset portfolio. The acquisition attempt accelerated Wanblad’s restructuring plan, which focuses on copper, iron ore, and crop nutrients. The company has already divested its platinum business and found buyers for its coal and nickel divisions.
